Abandoned factory in Waterbury destroyed in a large fire

Waterbury (AP) — An abandoned factory in Waterbury has been destroyed in a large fire.

Waterbury firefighters responded around 8:45 p.m. Saturday. The building was fully engulfed by the flames when they arrived.

WTIC-TV reports that Deputy Chief Rick Hart expects the fire to smolder for days until machines can pull apart collapsed debris and put water on hot spots.

He says it was a challenge to put the fire out due to the size of the building and a strong wind.

    A nearby residence was evacuated.

Firefighters were still at the scene Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The factory was built in 1900. The city took over it in 2015.
