1 dead after car ends up in river
WESTPORT, Conn. — Authorities say a man was killed and a woman was rescued after their car ended up in a Connecticut river.
Police and firefighters were called to the Saugatuck River in Westport after customers at a nearby restaurant heard a woman screaming for help from the river. Rescue workers spotted the woman in the middle of the river and pulled her to safety after boarding a nearby boat.
Farther up the river, crews found a man who had also been in the car. He was pulled from the river and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police identified him as 76-year-old Richard Lamendola of Syosset, New York.
Authorities say the car appears to have gone into the river at a boat launch. The Westport Police Department is investigating.
