Killingly hiker dies after 100-foot fall at state park

A 37-year-old man has died after a fall Sunday afternoon at Ross Pond State Park, where he was hiking with his family.

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis Schain said in a statement that Merton Hart III, who lived in the Ballouville section of Killingly, fell about 100 feet down a rocky hillside as he was walking along the top of an overlook above Half Hill Pond, also known as Lower Ross Pond.

Hart was hiking with his wife, three children under age 16 and another adult, Schain said.

He fell a little before 3 p.m. on Sunday, and died overnight at Rhode Island Hospital. Schain said local paramedics and firefighters had to take Hart through rocky terrain and brush to the edge of a pond, where he was taken to a waiting ambulance by a fire boat. He was later airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital.

Schain said DEEP Environmental Conservation Police are investigating.
