Road trip tip: Pop kings Squeeze play Sunday in New Haven

Sunday, College Street Music Hall, New Haven

Spent an agonizing hour or two recently listening to a rundown of songs on the current top singles on the pop charts. Ugh. What a minimalist and repetitive template! (Yes, as Steve Forbert once wistfully sang, "It sure was better back then.") In terms of just the pure art of songcraft, I have to wonder how pop geniuses like Squeeze would fare if they formed today and tried to resonate in the world of the Incredible Shrinking Attention Span. It'll be refreshing, then, to amble Sunday down to New Haven's College Street to see and hear Squeeze share such slices of greatness as "Wicked and Cruel," "Tempted," "Hourglass," "Is That Love," "Pulling Mussels (From a Shell)," "Black Coffee in Bed" and many more. Doors at 7 p.m., and showtime's 8 p.m. at 238 College St., New Haven. Tickets are $45-$75; 1-877-987-6487, collegestreetmusichall.com.
