Manueal Valera Trio plays "Planets" at Side Door

You music geeks remember composer/author/pianist Nicolas Slonimsky, right? The guy who wrote the book "Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns"?

Yep, that's the volume that inspired Florida Georgia Line to become musicians! Not really.

However, it is true that, last year, jazz artist Manuel Valera — himself an esteemed pianist/composer — finished a work called "The Planets," a multi-part suite inspired by the solar system, and it utilizes many harmonic and melodically based principles in Slonimsky's "Thesaurus."

"The Planets" was commissioned by the Chamber Music America/Doris Duke 2017 New Jazz Works program, and Valera and his trio will perform the piece Friday in Old Lyme at the Side Door Jazz Club. If you can happily imagine a melding of John Coltrane and Allan Holdsworth, with a sprinkling of Zappa and Schonberg, this might well be for you.

Manuel Valera Trio performs "The Planets," 8:30 p.m. Friday, Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $35; (860) 434-0886.
