New Haven's Alexander guests on "Live Lunch Break"

Today's performance by Alexander will stream live at noon at http://www.facebook.com/thedayct

Not since the band Chicago named their first 74 albums in chronologically Roman numeral fashion has an artist experimented a similar motif so successfully. New Haven acoustic guitarist Alexander — no, not the one with the Ragtime Band — released his first album in December. It's not called "I," but rather "Alexander." The Chicago/Roman numeral part comes into play because the songs on "Alexander" are titled "I," "II," "III" and so on through "IX" — with the exception of the fourth song which, instead of "IV," is called for some reason "Catfish Blues."

This is where things get even more complicated since Alexander's "Catfish Blues" is, as with the other songs on the album, a fingerpicked and wistfully meditative piece that seems to have nothing to do with the "Catfish Blues" written by Robert Petway and later covered by Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Gary Clark, Jr., and more. But I like Alexander's "Catfish." I like his whole album.

Alexander will be The Day's guest today on the latest episode of our "Live Lunch Break" concert series. The show starts at noon in New London's Telegraph Records Shop, and we think you'll find this a meditative, tranquil and compelling performance.
