Rap-fest takes place Friday at Grand Theater

Rap superstar Kendrick Lamar just won a Pulitzer Prize in Music for his album "DAMN." The committee described the album as "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life."

"Damn!" is probably the least of what was said by several generations of earlier rappers who laid the groundwork for Lamar's Pulitzer without earning any such accolades.

And I'm not at all sure what members of the Wu Tang Clan — whose clever work in the oft-based-on-reality field of gangsta rap was seminal and violent — might think. Like, maybe they left severed stallion heads on the front porches of Pulitzer committee members?

It'll be fun to reminisce on the golden days of the Wu Tangers Friday at the Masters of the Mic concert in the Grand Theater at Foxwoods. No, the whole Clan won't be there (Ol' Dirty Bastard's still dead, if nothing else). But Wu-Men Raekwon, Ghost Face Killah and Method Man, along with the latter's frequent collaborator Redman, will all take the stage to offer Gatlin gun recitations of immortal — if not Pulitzer-worthy — hits.

Masters of the Mic, 8 p.m. Friday, Grand Theater, Foxwoods; $45-$89; 1-800-200-2882.
