John Lennon and Paul McCartney did in fact co-write many Beatles songs, just as they separately composed tunes under the Lennon/McCartney publishing copyright.

It's a different set-up for Squeeze's Glenn Tilbook and Chris Difford, who have, with some justification, been frequently compared to the Beatles icons. Typically, Tilbrook writes the music and melodies and Difford supplies the lyrics, and both are extremely gifted at what they do. The result has been 15 albums of mostly great and timeless songs — wherein there seems to be no reason the "obscurities" aren't "the hits" or the other way around. For every "Tempted" or "Up the Junction" or "Black Coffee in Bed," there's a "King George Street" or "No Place Like Home" or "Wicked and Cruel" just waiting to sneak up and club you in the head.

All of this means that Squeeze, at the top of the '80s generation of superb pop bands along with peers Elvis Costello, Crowded House, Tears for Fears and XTC, endures as one of the most clever and melodic acts in rock history.

Tilbook and Difford bring the latest edition of their admittedly revolving-door roster to Foxwoods' Grand Theater Friday on their "Songbook 2019" tour. If you go to get a beer or a T-shirt, you're gonna miss a great song.
