CD tip: "All Encores" by Nils Frahm

The German pianist/composer/electronic musician has made a career out of wild experimentation that, regardless of stylistic shifts or instrumentation, always seduces and challenges in equally lovely fashion. "All Encores," following 2018's instrumentally and chorally expansive "All Melody," is a far more minimal exercise with many of the tunes based around lullabaic arpeggiated piano — "The Roughest Trade" and "The Walking Embrace" — or lengthier meditative works such as "Harmonium in the Well," in which Frahm coaxes mellow but eerie sounds from a reed organ, or the hummingbird-sequencing of "The Spell." "All Encores" isn't Frahm's most ambitious recording, but it's comforting and pleasant and definitely destined for plenty of fall-into-winter listening on the Koster home stereo.
