Yes, while saxophonist Mike Casey isn't technically from these parts, we at The Day feel a bit patriarchal about the jazz musician/composer. He attended the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz in Hartford and, with drummer Corey Garcia, performed on The Day's "Live Lunchbreak" concert series and recorded two different episodes of our "Song Spinner" music composition episodes.

Now a rising star in the Manhattan jazz scene, Casey brings his Trio — which includes Garcia and bassist Matt Dwonzyk — to the Side Door Jazz Club Friday. The show previews their upcoming new album, "Law of Attraction."

It's been a while since Casey visited, for the best possible reason. He spent a 12 months in a master's program at the Berklee School of Music's Valencia campus in Spain. Meanwhile, over his three-year professional career, Casey's songs have scored over 4 million worldwide plays, which is almost unheard of for a jazz musician with no major label ties.

It's going to be great to hear what he and Garcia have been up to and what we can look forward to from "Law of Attraction."

Mike Casey Trio, 8:30 p.m. Friday, 7:30 p.m. door, Side Door Jazz Club, 85 Lyme St., Old Lyme; $30; (860) 443-0886.
