Norwich seeks applicants for poet laureate

The city of Norwich in partnership with Norwich Creates, is seeking applicants for the selection of the city’s first poet laureate.

The honorary position, created in 2017, will serve as an ambassador for poetry by promoting and encouraging the appreciation of creative expression through poetry and literary arts activities.

The poet laureate will write and share his or her work in public appearances, digital media, workshops, and should inspire the community to find and share their own creative voice. The selected poet will be introduced in May 2020.

A Poet Laureate Selection Committee, consisting of five representatives of local middle school, high school and college English departments, Otis Library, and Norwich Creates, has been formed to assist in the selection.

Applicants can view the guidelines and submit an application at www.culturesect.org or visit Otis Library, 261 Main St., Norwich. The application deadline is 5 p.m, Tuesday, March 31.

Funding for the $300 poet laureate stipend is provided by the Carano Family in memory of Cynthia A. Carano. For more information, contact Carrie Dyer at cdyer@reliancehealthinc.org or Julie Menders at jmenders@otislibrarynorwich.org.
