Norwich - If the future for the 2010 graduates from Norwich Regional Technical High School is as bright as the building in which they spent their last three semesters, they will turn out to be 93 very successful Americans.

Students from 22 towns, having met the requirements in one of 11 trade offerings, received diplomas Tuesday before a packed auditorium at their new campus at the former Three Rivers Community College building, which doubled in size and received a $66 million upgrade before the students arrived.

The promise of a bright future was not lost on salutatorian Cathleen White. She told her classmates that although the surroundings were different, the goals of the school and the staff didn't vary from their days across town on New London Turnpike, where they swapped locations with the community college.

"The building might be new, but the mission didn't change," she said. "No matter what trade or shop we were in, we learned life lessons."

Jennifer Grillo, the class valedictorian, who currently works in a convalescent facility and plans to pursue a nursing degree, reminded her fellow seniors that the school prepared them to develop themselves as individuals and to make the difficult choices that come with growing up.

After thanking the parents, families and the teachers, she expressed her greatest gratitude to a select group of her classmates.

"Since I have a brother who served in Iraq, I have a deep appreciation for the military," she said. "Would all of the graduates who plan to enter the military please stand?"

They did, immediately followed by the entire audience, which provided them an extended and resounding ovation.
