Armory Line Dancing a Success

The Westerly Armory’s 6000 sq.ft. Drillshed has been busy these past few months with the sound of dancing feet. Line Dancing was very popular several decades back right on High Street in the center of our beautiful downtown. After Cha Cha’s closed its’ doors this active group of line dancers had to find other places to continue their dancing, many having to go as far as Coventry, RI.

Since this past January, the Armory along with Dawn Rathbun who is a local line dancing instructor, have been exploring the concept of bring this fun style of dancing by offering a Beginner/Intermediate full-day workshop followed by and evening dance. It was a huge success and all who stayed for the evening dance, about 30 people, walked into downtown and enjoyed our many local restaurants. People came from as far away as Massachusetts, central Connecticut, and all over Rhode Island along with our many local fans of Line Dancing. All remarked on how beautiful and friendly our little town was to them and how much they loved the Armory. Midway Pizza donated a sheet pizza that many felt was the best pizza ever.

This led to the need for a Beginner Workshop held in march. That too was very successful, leaving people wanting more. On Tuesdays, April 17th to may 15th from

6:30pm to 8:30pm, the Armory will be offering their first series of Line Dance Classes for Beginners. Please see our website for details on how to join the fun at Save the Date of May 19th for our next Intermediate Workshop & Evening Dance.

It is a good thing when non-profits like the Armory, which is a National Historic Landmark and local treasure & museum, can help our local economy in hard times. It is the Armory’s hope this will be a successful offering for the future and a way to bring newcomers to our beautiful town.
