CGA visits Westfield St. today

Coast Guard Academy looks to get back to the .500 mark when it visits Westfield State today (1 p.m.) in a New England Football Conference Bogan Division game.

The Bears (2-3, 1-2) lost to Bridgewater State a week ago, 44-21, and will try to avenge a 24-21 loss to Westfield State (2-4, 1-2) a year ago.

In that game, Coast Guard led 21-17 with 1:49 remaining when it fumbled the football on its own 3-yard line and Westfield scored a minute lead to stun the Bears 24-21.

Senior quarterback Jon Resch continues to lead the Coast Guard offense. Resch is 144 of 234 for 1,684 yards and 14 touchdowns.

He is averaging 353 totals yards per game, first in the NEFC and sixth nationally.

His top receiving threats are sophomore Collis Brown (40 receptions, 379 yards, 4 touchdowns) and senior Pat Meggers (29 receptions, 545 yards, 5 TDs). Meggers leads the NEFC in receiving yards per game (109.0)

Freshman Mike Clancy will make his first collegiate start at running back for the Bears. He began the season as Coast Guard's No. 4 tailback, but the Bears lost starter Tyler Hames in the second game of the season while a pair of sophomores - Jake Wawrzyniak and Matt Monteilh - were injured early in the Bridgewater game a week ago.

Clancy was limited to 12 yards on seven carries (he did score a touchdown), but he did have nine receptions for 55 yards and another TD.

Defensively, Coast Guard is led by senior strong safety Dante Adams (43 tackles, 28 solo) and senior linebacker Parker Bateson (39 tackles, 18 solo).

Westfield scored a school-record 63 points a week ago during a 63-13 win over Maine Maritime, ending a four-game losing streak.
