Ledyard High to honor Standish, Arsenault
Ledyard Public Schools will name the high school gymnasium and court after two late long time educators and coaches at the high school. The Ledyard High School gymnasium will now be known as Judy Dowe Standish Gymnasium. The playing court will be named in honor of Bob Arsenault.
Standish was a teacher and coach at Ledyard High School from 1963-1997. She was instrumental in the development of the physical education curriculum at the high school that provided thousands of students over the years with opportunities to learn and develop their skills. She was also involved in the cheerleading program, and was a long time coach in the outdoor track program and girls' basketball program.
Arsenault is a former teacher and coach at who served as the varsity boys' basketball coach from 1967-1973. Bob started the girls' basketball program at Ledyard and served as the varsity coach from 1975-1982. He compiled a record of 99-71 as the girls' coach and also led one of his teams to a state final appearance. Bob was also well known as the varsity boys' cross country coach leading the team from 1966-1995 compiling an overall record of 235-157-3.
The dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday Jan. 23 at 5:15 p.m. prior to the start of the Ledyard-St. Bernard varsity girls' basketball game.
