Memorial Day Celebrated Here

The Memorial Day Parade holds a special place in the hearts of residents here. Both Branford and North Branford will hold Memorial Day parades and events on Monday, May 27 to mark the day. Whether by viewing or marching, residents are encouraged to participate.

Branford will hold its three Memorial Day parade events on May 27, including the Stony Creek Memorial Day march at 8 a.m., Naval ceremonies at the Hubbard Bridge at 9:15 a.m., and the main parade and events on the Branford Town Green at 10 a.m. This year's parade marshal is Branford resident and U.S. Air Force veteran Lt. Col. Peter Brainerd.

The Stony Creek march is led by Stony Creek veterans and the Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps and travels from the village flagpole to the cemetery, where a reading of names of veterans interred takes place. The Naval parade includes ceremonies at the Hubbard Bridge over the Branford River on South Montowese Street. The main parade begins with services, readings, music. and presentations on the Town Green. All military veterans who would like to march are asked to fall-in with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars units. Many bands and fife and drum units, as well as scout units, floats, vintage cars, Fire Department units. and police units will march in the parade. In the event of rain, ceremonies will be held at Branford High School, 185 East Main Street, at 10 a.m.

North Branford's Memorial Day Parade will be held May 27, starting at 10 a.m. in the Northford end of town. The line-up begins at 9 a.m. and includes musical units, scout units, police and fire units, and many more. After the parade, VFW Post #8294 will conduct a service on the Green across from the Northford Store to commemorate the true meaning of Memorial Day. The day will conclude with refreshments at Northford Firehouse Co. 2.
