North Stonington – State police have confirmed at least one person is dead as a result of a one-car crash this afternoon on Route 2, just south of the intersection with Main Street.

The crash was reported at 1:37 p.m. First responders spent several hours at the scene cutting away portions of the white sedan to free the occupant. The car, which was on its side, appears to have traveled off the roadway, up an embankment and into a tree.

The car sustained heavy damage and the occupant was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

State police, along with firefighters from North Stonington and Old Mystic, remained at the scene as of 4 p.m. Route 2 was closed during response and investigation into the crash and remained closed at 4 p.m.

It is unclear if there was more than one occupant in the vehicle. Information on the identity of the deceased is not yet available.
