Taste Fine Wines at the Tavern

On Saturday, Sept. 21, lovers of fine wine are invited to imbibe at Medad Stone Tavern.

Representatives from more than 15 wineries world-wide will be on hand to offer complimentary samples to those attending the Guilford Keeping Society (GKS) annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at the historic Medad Stone Tavern from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The tavern will host wines from South Africa, France, California, and other growing regions across the globe. David Boeding, manager of Frank's Package Store in Guilford, is the event's wine coordinator.

"We're going to give guests a chance to try all kinds of different wines," said Boeding, adding that wine distributors will happily take orders for any wines catching a taster's fancy that evening (orders will be delivered to Frank's Package Store for pick-up).

And while sipping, do some shopping-the event's Silent Auction features everything from a weekend in Vermont to antiques, said Bob Donahue, event organizer.

"We're offering all kinds of beautiful and unusual items-artwork donated by the Greene Gallery, a weekend in Vermont, wine. It should be a great evening," said Donahue.

Add delicious appetizers to the night's sipping and shopping and all of the elements of the GKS Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction are complete. Tickets include wine and appetizers. Proceeds from the event benefit programs of non-profit GKS.

"We know people will enjoy strolling through the tavern, wine glass in hand, bidding on interesting items, and chatting with friends," said Donahue. "It's our big fundraising event of the fall season. The tavern is beautiful in early evening. It was meant for events like this."

Owned and restored by GKS, the 1803 Medad Stone Tavern has 14 rooms and 11 fireplaces. It was built as an inn, but Medad Stone's bet that Boston Post Road would be re-routed past his new inn on Three Mile Course was a losing one, and the inn never opened. As a private home, in 2001, it was bequeathed to GKS, which for more than 65 years has acted as a non-profit historical society dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Guilford.

In addition to Medad Stone Tavern and its outbuildings, GKS also operates and opens to the public the 1774 Thomas Griswold House Museum and its outbuildings. GKS also offers an extensive collection of Guilford historic photographs, journals, and other memorabilia for public study. GKS offers educational programs to promote Guilford history in town schools and takes a leading role in annual Early Guilford Days for the town's 4th-grade students.

The GKS annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction is Saturday, Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Medad Stone Tavern, 197 Three Mile Course. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Ticket price includes sampling the night's wines and appetizers. Advance tickets are available at Frank's Package Store, 15 Boston Street, Guilford. For more information, call 203-453-2500.
