There will be books, songs, rhymes, movement activities and a craft! There will be a playgroup immediately following the story time. Children ages three to five and their caregivers are invited to Dog Day Storytime with Phantom the Therapy Dog at Wheeler Library. Bernese Mountain Dog Phantom will be the special guest at this dog-themed storytime with books, songs, and more. Storytime is a special activity for children and their caregivers to share together. Little ones and grown-ups will learn to love reading as they listen to stories and sing songs and nursery rhymes. Geared to ages three to five. Siblings welcome. Registration is required. Join us Tuesday, June 26 at 1:00 at the Bill Memorial Library in the City of Groton for the kick-off of Libraries Rock! our 2018 Summer Reading Program. Register for our rock & roll reading game and earn chances for prizes. There will be trivia contests, a Rock & Roll “photo booth”, refreshments, and a visit from the goats of Red Brook Farm. Kids in grades K-5 who register for the program at the kick-off event will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a cruise aboard the Enviro-Lab at Project Oceanology.

The Summer Reading Game is open to kids entering grades K-5, and preschoolers can participate in the Read-To-Me portion of the program. Special library programs are held most Tuesdays at 1:00 through August 7, with the exception of our July7 Rock & Roll Summer School program, which starts at 1:00 p.m. RETURNING THIS YEAR –Anyone age 18 and under who registers for the summer reading program will have any fines for overdue materials waived from their record. Fine forgiveness does not apply to lost or damaged items.

Children ages four and up and their caregivers are invited to kick off the summer with “Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics.” Li Liu presents a one-woman acrobatic performance. The documented history of acrobatics in China goes back more than 2000 years. Li performs hand balancing, plate spinning, ribbon dancing, diabolos, foot juggling, and Chinese Kung Fu fan manipulation. A limited number of volunteers get to join her on stage to create an impromptu ribbon dance, and also to try their hand at plate spinning. Educational connections are made with the Chinese language and culture. Li explains some of the rituals of Chinese New Year, teaches the audience some basic Chinese phrases, and encourages them to think about what it might have been like to grow up in a different time and place.
