New London resident Shariff Holder stands outside his apartment building on State Street Wednesday morning holding his 12-week-old daughter, Jolee. Holder and his girlfriend, Lindsey Ducheneau, fled their top floor apartment after a fire broke out in the building around 11 a.m. "I grabbed the baby, she grabbed the dog, we ran and left," Holder said.
A fire at 130 State St. has been contained but firefighters continue to work on "hot spots," according to Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, who is on the scene.The building houses the State Street Diner and Zambala convenience store on the ground floor. Apartments are on the upper floors. William Cornish of New London owns the building, which he began renovating in 2005.
