Two firefighters from the Wequetequock Volunteer Fire Department reposition a hose line as crews from several towns battle a fire in a hay barn at 630 Al Harvey Rd. in Stonington Monday, September 10, 2018.There were no reports of injuries at the scene though a number of chickens did die in the barn. The two-story, 4,000-square-foot barn is located on the property of White Oak Farm, a former dairy farm owned by Scott Cheetham. The barn was stacked full of hay at the time of the fire. Old Mystic Fire Chief Kenneth Richards Jr. said 75 percent of the barn was already in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene and little could be done to save the structure. An unknown number of chickens were killed in the fire. Firefighters used water from a nearby pond to fight the fire and Richard said he called in several area departments to assist in manpower and provide more water from tankers. (Sean D. Elliot/The Day)
