Mystic — Two separate incidents left almost 5,000 residents in Mystic and Groton without power late Saturday night and into parts of Sunday afternoon.

The first outage, in downtown Mystic, left a handful of Connecticut Light & Power customers without power on Saturday night and was caused by the fall of a cross arm pole that supported a distribution line in a wooded area, said Al Lara, the utility's spokesman.

"The cross arm collapse may have been wind-related, but we can't determine why it fell. There weren't a lot of strong gusts, but it was windy for a short period of time," Lara said.

The six residents affected had intermittent power over the weekend and as of late Sunday night, Lara said all power had been restored.

The second outage, which affected thousands of customers, was due to a wire down on Cliff Street, which wasn't far from the first outage, Lara said.

According to Lara, the downed wire caused an additional failure in the power system, which CL&P workers had to first find in order to restore the power.

As of 9 p.m. Sunday, Lara said there were no more outages reported from either incident.
