    Valley Regional High School Presents Underclassmen Awards

    Valley Regional High School Principal Ian Neviaser, in conjunction with the school's department heads and counselors, recognized more than 60 underclassmen in a special awards ceremony at the school June 1.

    Department awards as well as special recognitions and leadership awards are listed here.

    Department Awards

    For English, presented by Joanna Najarian-Garb: Outstanding Student in Freshman English, Anna D'Agostino; Outstanding Student in Sophomore English, Colleen Gardner; Outstanding Student in Junior English, Shin-Yi (Eve) Lee; Outstanding Student in American Studies, Sara Maclean; and Dr. June Davison for Outstanding Effort in English Literature, Jonathan LaPlace, Mary MacNeil, and Daniel Cox.

    For Fine Arts-Music, presented by Matthew Talmadge: Outstanding Performance on Violin, Alanna Burke; Outstanding Performance on Cello, Eva Ribchinsky; Outstanding Vocal Improvement Bass, Jason DiPietro; Outstanding Vocal Improvement Alto, Michaela Morris; Outstanding Vocal Improvement Baritone, Christopher Carney; Outstanding Vocal Improvement Soprano, Shelby Hardgrove; Outstanding Vocal Improvement Vocal Class, Kelsey Murphy; and Most Improved Jazz Instrumentalist, Keir Magoulas.

    For Valley Regional Musical Production, presented by Matthew Talmadge: Outstanding Cast Underclassman, Kelsey Murphy, and Outstanding Crew Underclassman, Stephen Klinck.

    Book and Leadership Awards

    Wellesley College Book Award-to a junior girl who has made an outstanding contribution to the school in scholastic achievement, leadership and citizenship. Shin-Yi (Eve) Lee.

    Dartmouth College Book Award-to a junior who has demonstrated intellectual leadership and made a positive contribution to the extracurricular life of the school. Ryan Wichtowski.

    Yale Book Award-to a junior class member who displays "outstanding personal character and intellectual promise." Mitchell King.

    Harvard Book Award-to an outstanding junior who combines excellence in scholarship with achievement in other fields. Patrick Campbell.

    Mount Holyoke Book Award-to a junior girl in recognition of academic excellence, special qualities of leadership, and potential for significant contribution to the community. Allison Pash.

    Smith College Book Award

    to an outstanding junior who has exemplified the academic achievement, leadership qualities, and concern for others that characterize the thousands of women who have graduated from Smith College. Alanna Burke.

    Gettysburg College Book Award-to a member of the junior class who has distinguished himself or herself in the study of American History. Stephen Klinck.

    Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award-to the student in the junior class who has attained high scholastic standing in both science and math. Should the recipient attend the University of Rochester, he or she will receive a $6,000 per year scholarship. Patrick Campbell.

    Rensselaer Medalist Award-to the student in the junior class who has attained the highest scholastic standing in science subjects. Should the recipient attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he or she will receive a $15,000 per year merit scholarship. Shin-Yi (Eve) Lee.

    The Connecticut Association of Schools Student Leadership Award-Patrick Campbell.

    American Legion Nutmeg Boy's State-Three junior boys were selected as delegates to learn about the electoral process and the legislative functions of government. Selection is based on leadership, ability, friendliness, good sportsmanship, civic interest, cooperativeness, and scholastic standing. They are: Alan Shortz of Chester, Alexander Polo of Essex, and Cody Carver of Deep River.

    American Legion Laurel Girls' State-Three junior girls were selected as delegates to learn about the electoral process and the legislative functions of government. Selection is based on leadership, ability, friendliness, good sportsmanship, civic interest, cooperativeness, and scholastic standing They are: Arianna Vassallo of Chester, Kelsey Murphy of Essex, and Allison Pash of Deep River.
