UConn women win tournament opener over Hartford, 75-39

Storrs — All five starters finished in double figures as the No. 1 UConn women's basketball team opened the NCAA tournament with a 75-39 rout of No. 16 Hartford at Gampel Pavilion.

UConn will next meet No. 9 Purdue in the second round at 7 p.m. Tuesday, also at Gampel. Purdue (21-11) defeated No. 8 Kansas State Sunday, 53-45.

The two-time defending national champion, UConn (33-1) got 12 points each from Maya Moore, Bria Hartley, Stefanie Dolson and Tiffany Hayes and 10 from Kelly Faris. Moore and Dolson had seven rebounds each.

Alex Hall had 10 points for Hartford (17-16), the America East Conference champion, coached by former UConn All-American Jen Rizzotti. Montville's Nikkia Smith had six points and two rebounds for the Hawks.

UConn led 40-17 at halftime, with Dolson scoring all 12 of her points.

All nine UConn players saw action, with redshirt sophomore Heather Buck playing for the first time since Feb. 22 due to injury. Buck missed the Big East Conference tournament, as the Huskies won with eight players, six of whom played in the championship game.

Moore broke her own UConn single-season scoring record of 754 points, set as a sophomore. She now has 765.
