    Pine Swamp Wildlife Corridor

    Town: Ledyard

    Directions: To Whalehead Road entrance: Take I-95 to Route 12 north to right on Whalehead Road; after .3 miles turn left to stay on Whalehead Road.To Vinegar Hill Road entrance: Take I-95 to Route 12 north to right on Long Cover Road to first left to stay on Long Cover Road to left on Vinegar Hill Road.

    Where to Park: There is a parking area at Whalehead Road entrance and street parking at the Vinegar Hill Road entrance.

    Description: There are four marked trails through about 325 acres of wetlands, shrub and forest habitats. The area includes the aquifer for a water system that serves 800 homes.

    Regulations: Open sunrise to sunset; dogs must be on a leash no longer than 7 feet at all times; passive recreational uses – hiking, birdwatching, photography – are permitted.

    Amenities: None.

    Natural Features: Several ponds, wetlands and vernal pools that provide good habitat for amphibians and other wildlife; area has been mostly undisturbed since Colonial times.

    Fees: Free. Users of properties are encouraged to become members of Avalonia, as there are costs associated with maintenance. Membership forms are available at http://www.avalonialandconservancy.org/DONORS-MEMBERSINFO.html
