Cue the zombie! Thriller to start shooting June 6 in Norwich and Mystic
Zombies, movie spotlights, tanks and military trucks and probably dozens of onlookers will occupy downtown Norwich and the Mystic Ramada for much of June.
A filming schedule released Friday by Norwich officials helping coordinate Synthetic Cinema's Chiller network movie "Remains" shows that zombies will inhabit much of the Main Street and Franklin Square area and the Mystic Ramada from June 6 through June 29.
The ambitious schedule calls for filming to begin during the day June 6 in the Main Street-Franklin Square area. Throughout the month on specific, scheduled days, zombies will be seen on the roofs of the Wauregan Hotel, the Main Street parking garage, dark downtown alleys, at the Donald Oat Theater at Norwich Arts Center and even in City Hall on June 21.
In Mystic, most of the shooting will take place inside the Ramada Inn on Route 27.
Filming will conclude with shots in a pool at a location to be determined.
Synthetic Cinema International of Rocky Hill announced in March that it would film the movie based on the novel "Remains" in Mystic and Norwich in June. Producer Andrew Gernhard, a Norwich native and 1995 Norwich Free Academy graduate, has been meeting with Norwich officials and building owners during the past two months to scout out locations and finalize plans.
City officials coordinating the event expect few changes to the dates now that filming is on the horizon.
Gernhard was not available Friday to discuss the plan.
Here is a further breakdown of the schedule:
During the first week, filming will take place in daylight and at night in the Franklin Square area from June 6-8 before moving to the Mystic Ramada on June 9. The crew returns to Norwich for a Saturday night shoot in Franklin Square. Roads will be closed during the night shoot.
Shooting will continue in downtown from June 12-14, including roof shots at the Wauregan Hotel June 12 and both day and night work at the Norwich Arts Center on June 13. The crews move back to Mystic for June 15-16.
Another night shoot is planned in Franklin Square on June 18, and the crews will work June 19 at the Mystic Ramada and again return to Norwich for another night shoot in Franklin Square June 20. The road is expected to be closed that day.
Daytime filming in City Hall is planned for June 21 and at the Main Street parking garage June 22 and 23, with another road closure on the 23rd.
After a day off, it will be back to Franklin Square for the final time on June 25 and then to Mystic to finish filming June 26-28, with the "to be determined" pool shot at the end on June 29.
