Music tip: "The Whole Love"

Paced by spot-on musicianship and weird but familiar melodies, Wilco's eighth studio album ranks among the band's finest work, but don't call it a return to form. That's because Jeff Tweedy and company have never really had a form. While the group started as alt-country standard bearers, for past 10 years they've been America's rock band without portfolio, unafraid to explore new sonic territory with each record. On this set, it's the songs that matter. Sure, there's an experimental side to "The Whole Love" that Wilco forces you do contend with on the mind-bending opener "Art of Almost." But later, on the romantic "Dawned on Me," Tweedy delivers one of the catchiest songs in his impressive catalogue. It will lure you in.
