Mystic Seaport reaches milestone in restoration of whaler Charles W. Morgan

Mystic - Shipwrights at Mystic Seaport installed the final plank in the hold of the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan on Friday completing most of the work in the hold.

The restoration project will now move on to the exterior planking of the hull.

"This is a significant moment in our venture to restore the Morgan and preserve an iconic part of America's maritime heritage. Many people have worked hard to get us to this point and achieving milestones like this put us that much closer to our goal of returning her to sea in 2014. It is a proud moment for our shipwrights," museum president Stephen White said.

The museum said the restoration of the world's last surviving wooden whaling ship is on schedule for completion in the summer of 2013 . In 2014, the Morgan is slated to sail to ports along the East Coast. The ship remains open to visitors during the work.
