Cochran now officially part of UConn football family
Storrs - Casey Cochran, the former New London High School quarterback and two-time Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year at Masuk of Monroe, has officially enrolled at UConn.
Cochran and four other players joined the program at the start of the spring semester, which began Tuesday.
Other players to enroll, according to a university release, were center Kyle Bockeloh (Houston, Tex.), offensive guard Drew Ghio (Bristol Eastern), quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) and tailback Joseph Williams (Allentown, Pa.).
Cochran (6-0, 216) led New London to the Class SS state title in 2008 and Masuk to the Class L state title in 2010. He finished as the state's career leading in passing yards and completions.
Bockeloh (6-foot-2, 286 pounds) played at Cypress Creek High School in Houston. He graduated in the spring of 2011, but delayed his college enrolled to January.
Ghio (6-1, 297), a walk-on, spent the 2011 fall semester at Loomis Chafee in Windsor. He was an all-conference pick at Bristol Eastern and played in the 20101 Governor's Cup game.
Whitmer (6-1, 188) was an all-state pick at Downers Grove South (Ill.) in 2009, spent the the 2010 season as a redshirt at Illinois and then transferred to Butler Community College (Kan.), where he passed for 3,022 yards and 25 touchdowns last fall. He has three years of eligilibity for the Huskies.
Williams (5-11, 197) spent one semester at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy after graduating from Emmaus High School, where he rushed for 1,243 yards as a senior. He also won Lehigh Valley Conference championships in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in outdoor track.
In other news, an athletic department spokesman confirmed that four ex-Huskies will participate in senior all-stars games in the coming weeks.
Center Moe Petrus will play in Saturday's East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., offensive tackle Mike Ryan will play in the first NFLPA Collegiate All-Star Game on Saturday in Carson, Calif., defensive tackle Kendall Reyes will play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 28 in Mobile, Ala., and kicker Dave Teggart will play in the inaugural Players All-Star Classic on Feb. 4 in Little Rock, Ark.
