Schaffer murder trial delayed

The murder trial of Chad M. Schaffer, initially scheduled to begin on Thursday in Superior Court in Norwich, has been postponed due to an illness in the family of one of the attorneys in the case.

A new trial date has not yet been determined.

Schaffer, a 34-year-old restaurant worker from Norwich, is accused of the May 14, 2004, beating death of Eugene Mallove, 56, of New Hampshire. The prominent physicist was beaten to death in the driveway of a family-owned home at 119 Salem Turnpike in Norwich.

Schaffer, who is being held at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, has pleaded not guilty and opted for a trial. Schaffer, his cousin Mozzelle Brown and his ex-girlfriend, Candace Foster all were accused with Mallove’s murder in 2010, after charges were dismissed against two men who were initially arrested. Brown is serving a federal prison sentence and has not yet been served with a murder warrant.
