Cub Scouts donate to De Mond Children's Fund

The Cub Scouts Pack 17 in Norwich recently donated $1,000 to the De Mond Children's Fund. The Scouts presented a check to members of the Norwich Fire Department at a Pack meeting May 10 at Saints Peter & Paul Church.

The Scouts raised the money by holding a pancake breakfast and bake sale last month at the church.

Six-year-old Alex De Mond and his brother Cole, 4, were seriously injured in a March 9 car accident that killed their father, Norwich firefighter Benjamin De Mond.

Cubmaster Ann Marie Jakubielski said proceeds from the breakfast typically help Scouts pay for activities such as summer camp.

"This year, however, we talked to the boys about using this money to help the De Mond family," she said. "It was a great opportunity for us to teach the boys the value of helping others."

Jakubielski said it was also important for the Pack to show support not just for the De Mond family but for the fire department as well.

“Dens in our Pack use the fire station for meetings on a regular basis,” she said. “And the department has never hesitated to help us out with any request. While we are honored to help the De Mond children, we also wanted to show our support for the members of the department.”
