Connecticut man arrested after allegedly killing black bear

A dead bear is seen in this photo released by the state DEEP. Officials say a 42-year-old Burlington resident has been arrested for illegally killing the roughly 460 pound animal.

Burlington – A black bear weighing about 460 pounds was shot and killed this morning by 42-year-old resident.

Cory Maitz, of 6 Cobblestone Road, was arrested for illegally killing a black bear, a misdemeanor, and criminal possession of a pistol, a Class D felony. Maitz allegedly shot the bear after he had seen it enter his garage, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said in a news release.

DEEP Environmental Conservation Police responded to the scene after a call from a resident that they had seen a black bear in their yard, heard two gunshots, and then saw the bear lay down, DEEP said.

EnCon officers seized the bear and the firearm as evidence pending court action. Maitz was released on a written promise to appear in Bristol Superior Court on June 4.
