Boating sales on the rise

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reported 2011 as the first year since 2006 that American retailers saw a rise in U.S. sales for recreational boats, accessories and services.

Retail sales in this category rose 6 percent to $32.3 billion from the end of 2010 to last year. Boating participation rose 10 percent, while boat sales increased marginally.

"The new data signals the beginning of a recovery for the U.S. recreational boating industry," according to the association's analysis.

An estimated 83 percent of boats sold in the United States were American made, while an equal percentage of boaters had household income below $100,000.
