Norwich – The St. Vincent de Paul Place soup kitchen is moving after all to the St. Joseph School on Cliff Street for six months during repairs of the current location in the former train station behind Main Street.

The move was announced in early June, but then was canceled when the facility couldn’t obtain a building permit to occupy the former cafeteria at St. Joseph School.

Now, with structural repair work expanding at the train station, and the state building official approving a temporary waiver of handicapped accessibility requirements at the school, the move is back on.

The soup kitchen will move Wednesday to the new location for about six months, Diocese of Norwich spokesman Michael Strammiello said today.

Soup kitchen officials also will decide soon whether to stay permanently at the train station, move permanently to the school or even to a third unidentified location.

For now, the move to the school is temporary, and the school building would need handicapped accessibility before the facility would be allowed to remain there beyond six months, city Director of Inspections James Troeger said this morning.
