    Local roundup: CT Pirates Black headed to Potvin 13-U final

    Groton — Josh Bowman went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI as the CT Pirates Black beat Waterford Saturday, 7-3, in the winner's bracket final of the 13-under Potvin Tournament.

    The Pirates will play the Shoreline Hammerheads in today's championship game at Dodd Stadium at 10:30 a.m. If the Hammerheads win, then a winner-take-all-game will be played Monday at the same site at a time to be announced.

    Joe'l Garcia went 2-for-3, including a double, with two RBI for the Pirates and T.T. Bowens had a single, a run and an RBI and turned two unassisted double plays.

    Juan Otanez added a single, two RBI and a run and Sam Foster allowed just three earned runs over five innings for the win.

    Patrick Lambert had a single, a run and an RBI for the Pirates and Hunter Nadeau pitched two innings for the save.

    Potvin tournament (19)

    • Mike Esposito pitched six innings for the win and added an RBI as Jewett City edged Fewls, 3-2. Gage Griffin earned the save for Jewett City and Zach Wood had two hits and scored twice. Pete Aldrich had two hits for Fewls and Babito Siera and Justin Williams both doubled.

    Speedbowl postpones program

    • Waterford Speedbowl postponed Saturday's "Wings & Wheels" event due to the threat of inclement weather. It will be held this Saturday with the International Supermodified Association, Northeastern Midget Association, and the Speedbowl's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

    Montville fall sports

    • There will be three sessions of registration to play fall sports at Montville, beginning Monday, Aug. 20 from noon-5 p.m. The other sessions are Thursday, Aug. 23 (3-5 p.m.) and Saturday, Aug. 25 (8-10 a.m.). All three sessions will be at the high school's main office. Registrants need to bring a copy of a current physical form (within 13 months) and a signed parent permission form. Both forms are available in the main office.

    Practice begins Monday, Aug. 20 for football (all players, including freshmen) at 5:15 p.m. Boys' and girls' cross country begins Saturday, Aug. 25 on the track at 2 p.m., boys' soccer is Saturday, Aug. 25 at 8 a.m.; girls' soccer is Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m., and volleyball is Saturday, Aug. 25 in the gymnasium at noon.
