Evans eager to start UConn career

The UConn campus is coming to life with the start of school just around the corner.

Several members of the men’s basketball team are already there.

Enosch Wolf, Niels Giffey, Tyler Olander, R.J. Evans and Leon Tolksdorf were spotted working out in Gampel Pavilion on Thursday afternoon. Shabazz Napier also is around.

More Huskies will arrive over the next few days. Classes start on Monday.

Evans, a graduate student from Salem, is already looking forward to the first official day of practice in October.

    “I can’t wait,” Evans said.

Evans, who graduated from Holy Cross in May, has one year of eligibility left.

He’s spent the summer in Storrs, attending both summer school sessions and living on campus. He’s enjoying getting to know his teammates and coaching staff.

“It’s a good adjustment period...,” Evans said. "I feel like we're creating a good bond, which will help us out in the season."

No word yet on when Jim Calhoun will be ready to return to full time coaching duties. He’s home recovering from a broken hip suffered in a bike accident on Aug. 4.

Evans heard from his teammates that Calhoun stopped by Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday.

“I didn’t get to see him, but he was here yesterday,” Evans said. “He’s a trooper. We know he will be back around yelling at us.”

“I called him a week after it happened and he sounded like nothing even happened to him.”
