Groton - The Groton Board of Education on Tuesday approved a contract with new Interim Superintendent John Ramos.

The board voted 6-2, according to school board member Robert Peruzzotti, to approve payments of $721.88 a day to Ramos. The figure, according to the contract, is based on a pro-rated base salary of $167,475 over 232 days, from Oct. 1 through June 30, 2013. The contract also includes $250 a month for use of his personal vehicle.

Ramos fills a vacancy left by former interim superintendent Randall Collins, who left at the end of September and was filling in for Superintendent Paul Kadri. Kadri remains on paid administrative leave while the school board considers his termination over allegations of mistreatment of employees.

Ramos is the former Bridgeport school superintendent who served there from 2004 to 2011 before a new state-appointed board of education terminated his contract under what Ramos called a "mutual agreement." He was paid a lump sum of $228,000, and secured health benefits for he and his wife for the next several years.
