Norwich — City police arrested a Norwich woman late Friday night and charged her with two counts of second-degree assault in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left two people injured, one in critical but stable condition.

Amalia Rivera, 36, of 40 Donahue Drive also was charged with evading responsibility and failure to drive right, police said. She was being held this morning on a $100,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Oct. 25 in Norwich Superior Court.

Police responded at 7:22 p.m. Friday to a report of a hit-and-run incident in which two pedestrians were struck in the vicinity of 380 Hamilton Ave. The victims have been identified as a 20-year-old woman, who was in critical but stable condition Friday night at The William W. Backus Hospital, and a 21-year-old male with minor injuries, who also was admitted to Backus, police said.

The vehicle that struck the pedestrians also struck a parked car before the driver fled the scene, driving north on Hamilton Avenue (Route 165) toward Preston.

At 10:20 p.m., police located the vehicle, a black 1999 Chrysler 300, and Rivera, the registered owner of the vehicle, on Donahue Drive. Police said they learned Rivera was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.
