Bust of Medal of Honor recipient Jacklyn Harold Lucas to be unveiled

Hartford — The Trustees of the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard will unveil a bust of Medal of Honor recipient Jacklyn Harold Lucas at the First Company Governor’s Foot Guard Armory in Hartford Nov. 12.

The public is invited to attend the program at 159 High St., which begins with the Foot Guard Monthly Battalion Parade at 7:30 p.m., followed by the bust unveiling at 7:45 p.m.

The bust will remain in the armory as part of the collection of military artifacts. Retired Capt. Paul Bucha, also a Medal of Honor winner for his actions during the Vietnam War, will unveil the bust. The founding of the United States Marine Corps will be celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony.

On Feb. 20, 1945, Lucas was fighting Japanese soldiers in a trench during the Battle of Iwo Jima when he dived on top of two grenades and pushed them deep into the beach’s volcanic ash to shield three other Marines from harm. One of the grenades exploded and Lucas suffered near-fatal injuries. For his actions, he was presented the Medal of Honor.
