Israel has no blame for lack of peace talks

The opening "The Obama administration sought Friday to direct Israel and the Palestinians back toward direct peace talks" in the article "U.S. tries to restart Mideast peace talks" published Dec. 1, creates a false impression.

Only the Palestinian Arabs have to be directed back towards direct talks. The Israelis have been almost overly eager for the resumption of direct talks since the Arabs pulled out four years ago without even bothering to respond to Israel's incredibly generous offer to help them establish a state in the equivalent of all the disputed territory.

One may wonder why Israel is so eager, given that the Palestinian Authority has blatantly violated virtually every important commitment under the Oslo Accords, but then Israel has always made peace with its neighbors a top priority, while for the Arabs peace has been a bitter price whose payment would signal the abandonment of its goal of destroying Israel.
