Simsbury - Dan Britos, Tyler Courter and Jacob Martin all won championships for the Norwich Free Academy wrestling team at Thursday's Frank Chaves Invitational in Simsbury.

Simsbury won with 194 points, while NFA placed fourth (95).

Britos beat Simsbury's Keith Fernandes 9-5 to win at 132 pounds. Courter beat Allen Currier of Hall of West Hartford 11-6 to win the 145-pound title. Martin beat Vincent Palermo of Simsbury 6-2 to win at 106 pounds. NFA's Edgar Charles placed third at 160.

In other meets:

• McKenzie Mahn (182), Jake Caskey (132) and Ian Concescia (152) had pins for Montville in a 45-21 victory over Lyman Memorial in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division. Joe Rainville added an 8-2 decision at 120 pounds in the victory for the Indians (5-1 2-0).

• Victor Calle (145) and Justin Keating (160) won matches for St. Bernard-Norwich Tech-Wheeler during its 42-28 loss to Griswold in the ECC Small Division. The Saints are 1-2, 0-2.

H.S. gymnastics

• Stonington's Megan McNeil won the bars (8.7), tied for first on the beam (8.7) and placed second in the all-around (34.4) in a tri-meet against Valley Regional of Deep River and the Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Old Saybrook co-op. Valley won with 124.55 points. Stonington had 124.05 points and Haddam-Killingworth had 92.75 points. Haddam-Killingworth's Sammie Lemire won the all-around (35.5).

College baseball

• UConn senior second baseman LJ Mazzilli was named the Big East Conference preseason player of the year as voted on by the league's coaches.

In the preseason coaches' poll, the Huskies were pegged fourth for the second straight season.

Mazzilli is the only player to represent the Huskies on the preseason team. As a junior, he led UConn in almost every major offensive category; including batting average (.339), home runs (9) and RBI (38).
