State police to enforce impaired driving laws on Super Bowl Sunday

State police announced Thursday that troopers will be on alert and enforcing impaired driving laws this Sunday during and after the Super Bowl.

The day is one of the year’s most dangerous on the roads and highways across the state, police said in a release, because of accidents involving impaired drivers.

“The designation of a sober driver is the best way to avoid a tragedy or injury caused by a drunk driver,” State Police Col. Danny R. Stebbins said. “Remember jail time, fines, loss of license, and other penalties can ruin a celebratory day.”

Police also said football pools, where people pick the winner and final score of the game for money, are legal as long as the pool organizer doesn’t take a cut of the cash. All money must be paid to the winner, police said.

Such betting pools are illegal in any bar or establishment selling alcohol, police said.

The Baltimore Ravens will take on the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans Sunday. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.
