Islanders 5, Devils 4

Brad Boyes scored a power-play goal on a rebound at 2:01 of overtime and the New York Islanders beat the Devils Thursday night, handing New Jersey its third straight loss in overtime.

John Tavaras scored twice, and Keith Aucoin and Mark Streit once for the Islanders, who avenged an opening-night loss to the Devils. Evgeni Nabokov made 28 saves for New York, including a big one on an early Devils power play in overtime.

Adam Henrique Steve Bernier, Ryan Carter and Henrik Tallinder tallied for the Devils, who three times rallied to tie it. Martin Brodeur made 30 saves, but had the puck stolen from him by Boyes, setting up the game winner.

Boyes banged in Frans Nielsen's rebound, while Tavares also picked up an assist.

Nabokov and Brodeur both came up big early in the overtime, which was witnessed by the Devils' fourth sellout in as many games. Nabokov stopped defenseman Marek Zidlicky late in a power play that started late in the third period.

Tallinder picked up a cross-checking penalty with 3:13 left in the overtime and Boyes tallied 14 seconds later.

Henrique, who missed the first five games while recovering from surgery on his left thumb, came back in style, roofing a loose puck in front past Nabokov to tie the game with 6:10 to play.

Streit had given New York a 4-3 lead a little more than two minutes earlier when his shot from the point was deflected past Brodeur by New Jersey defenseman Adam Larsson, who also was playing in his first game of the season.

The Islanders, who had scored only one goal in each of their last five games with New Jersey, took leads of 2-0 and 3-2 only to see the Devils tie the game at 3-all after two periods.

Tallinder, who did not score a goal last season after missing much of the year with a blood clot in his leg, tied the game at 3 with a shot from above the right circle after the Islanders failed to clear the puck out their zone after sustained pressure.

Tavares, who didn't score in the first four games, had put New York ahead with his second goal of the night and fourth in the last three games. Nabokov made a save on David Clarkson and Matt Moulson sprung his center for a breakaway tally that seemed to catch Brodeur a little too far out of his net.

Sabres 7, Bruins 4

Thomas Vanek had three goals and two assists, setting up the tiebreaking score with 13:06 left in the third period, to lead Buffalo to a victory over Boston.

Vanek opened the scoring 98 seconds into the game, then had a goal and an assist to tie it after Boston took a 3-1 lead in the second. The Bruins went up 4-3 in the third before Alexander Sulzer tied it on a wrister from the faceoff circle, and then Vanek helped give Buffalo the lead when he kept the puck in the zone, faked a shot and slid it over to Cody Hodgson for the game-winner.

Ryan Miller made 38 saves for Buffalo, which ended a four-game winless streak. Tuukka Rask stopped 25 shots for the Bruins.

Vanek picked up his eight career hat trick with 1:31 left to play. And he was trailing the play - but did not get an assist - when Jason Pominville skated in for the empty-netter with 14 seconds left to clinch it.

Vanek, who entered the game tied for sixth in scoring in the league, now has 54 points in 46 career games against the Bruins.

Brad Marchand scored two goals and Rich Peverley and David Krejci had one apiece for Boston, which had points in its first six games since Bobby Orr led the Bruins to a 5-0-1 mark in 1970-71. A win would have equaled the best start in franchise history.

Penguins 3, Rangers 0

Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots for his 49th NHL shutout, and Pittsburgh scored on the first shot of the first and third periods in a victory over New York.

Evgeni Malkin gave the Penguins the lead just 1:24 in, James Neal added a power-play goal 28 seconds into the third - after another costly too many men on the ice penalty for the Rangers - and Simon Despres netted his second NHL goal to give Pittsburgh (4-3) its second win in five games.

Malkin added an assist, as did captain Sidney Crosby, on Neal's goal. Despres came out of the penalty box to score at 10:23 of the third right after Rangers defenseman Anton Stralman hit the post at the other end.

Pittsburgh is winless at home but 4-1 on the road. The Penguins have two wins in New York this season, one fewer than the host Rangers, who had won three of four overall.

Vokoun was steady throughout in earning his 289th NHL victory, but wasn't challenged much by the Rangers (3-4), who have scored two goals or fewer in four games. He was bailed out twice in the third by drives that struck posts behind him.

New York struggled to generate offense in its first game without captain Ryan Callahan, expected to be sidelined 10-14 games by a shoulder injury sustained Tuesday in a win against Philadelphia.

Blues 4, Blue Jackets 1

Barret Jackman, Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko each scored in the opening 14 minutes, Brian Elliott made 24 saves and St. Louis won its fourth straight game, beating Columbus.

David Backes, who also had an assist, added an empty-netter. T.J. Oshie had two assists.

Maple Leafs 3, Capitals 2

Nikolai Kulemin and Matt Frattin scored third-period goals to give Toronto its first home win of the season with a comeback victory over Washington.

Kulemin tied it 2-all at 7:40 of the third, poking in a puck that squeezed through Michal Neuvirth's legs following Michael Kostka's shot from the point. As the Washington goalie tried in vain to squeeze his pads, Kulemin reached behind and nudged the puck in for his first of the year.

Panthers 6, Jets 3

Alex Kovalev scored the go-ahead goal during Florida's five-goal outburst in the third period, helping the Panthers rally for a victory over Winnipeg.

Kris Versteeg, Peter Mueller, Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas Kopecky also scored in the final frame for the Panthers, who scored four answered goals in the final 8:40 after falling behind 3-2.
