NFA girls win Class LL state indoor track and field title

New Haven — Brianna Lenehan won a pair of events, setting a meet record in the 1,000-meter run, as Norwich Free Academy won CIAC Class LL girls’ indoor track and field championship Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

It was the first indoor state title in program history for the Wildcats, who finished with 83.5 points to easily defeat runnerup Staples (58).

Lenehan won the 1,000 in 2 minutes, 54.49 seconds, breaking the old record of 2:54.71 set by Glastonbury’s Lindsay Crevoiserat in 2010. She also captured the 1,600 in 5:01.85.

NFA captured three other events. Dyshelle Pemberton won the 300 (41.46 seconds), Katherine Gabriele won the pole vault (10 feet, 3 inches) and Camille McKenzie, Charlotte Van Sambeck, MiaLynne Park and Pemberton teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in 4:06.87.

Pemberton also added a second in the 600 (1:37.22).

In the boys’ meet, NFA finished third with 46 points (Staples won the 78 and Danbury was second with 76) and three champions: Martin Lewerk in the long jump (21 feet, one-half inch), Chris Byars in the shot put (47-9) and the 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Lewerk, Joseph Trahan, Kobe Amos and Kyle Liang (3:40.14).
