ACLU, League of Women Voters among sponsors of election forum in Waterford

Waterford - A forum discussing problems with the American electoral system and potential changes to how Connecticut holds presidential elections will be presented next month at the Waterford Public Library.

The free event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 20 and sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southeastern Connecticut, Common Cause of Connecticut and League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut.

Speakers knowledgeable about elections will explore, among other topics, the merits of the national popular vote as opposed to the current Electoral College system. Connecticut is considering joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which is an agreement among states to give all electoral votes to the candidate who won the majority of the popular vote. Also on the agenda is a discussion of instant runoff voting, which would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference.
