    Berg wins 100 backstroke; Vikings finish third

    Middletown - Fitch High School senior Christian Berg won the 100-yard backstroke and East Lyme finished third Wednesday at the CIAC Class M boys' swimming championship at Wesleyan University.

    Berg won with a time of 51.45. He was also fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.76.

    The Vikings, winners of the Eastern Connecticut Conference meet in 10 of the last 11 years and sixth straight ECC regular-season titles, had 556 points.

    Brookfield won with 707 points and New Canaan was second (572). Fitch finished eighth (233 points) and Waterford was 22nd (34).

    East Lyme's lone individual title came in the 200 freestyle relay, where Adam Opsahl, Eric Stirtan, Clayton Otter and Sam Magna won in 1:28.96. Opsahl, a senior, had a pair of second-place finishes - the 200 individual medley (1:56.55) and the 100 butterfly (52.48).

    East Lyme's Billy Dumais and Magna also scored in two events. Dumais was seventh in the 100 butterfly (55.86) and the 100 backstroke (56.10). Magna was fourth in the 50 freestyle (22.46) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (48.67).

    Austin Toback was eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.48) for East Lyme, which was also third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.39) and fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:43.17).

    Fitch sophomore Dakota Williams was eighth in the 100 freestyle (49.90), and the Falcons were sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.14) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.30).
