East Lyme public hearing today to focus on town property sale, three appropriations

East Lyme — Several matters will come before residents at a public hearing and special town meeting today at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on the Niantic Sportsmen's Club's option to buy from the town a portion of a property on 82 Plants Dam Road, where the 17th century Samuel Smith House is located. The Board of Selectmen is holding the public hearing Wednesday.

Last fall, the Niantic Sportsmen's Club had proposed buying 9½ acres of the property for $125,000 to use as a buffer zone.

Residents also will vote upon three proposed appropriations approved last week by the Board of Finance and previously by the Board of Selectmen.

One item is $29,000 to purchase three ATV's and one jet ski for the Police and Parks and Recreation departments to use for security and maintenance at the new beach. The purchase would be reimbursable through a security grant from the Nuclear Safety Emergency Program.

Another item is appropriating $59,118 for improvements at the Cini Park parking lot.

A third item is appropriating $221,564 for a Simulcast System for town communications. The system would be payable over five years.

Agendas for Wednesday's meetings, including the regular Board of Selectmen meeting immediately following, can be found at www.eltownhall.com.
