Husband faces more charges following Old Saybrook fire

Old Saybrook — Police have lodged more charges against a local man who allegedly attempted to kill his wife by setting their Beaver Dam Trail home on fire on Feb. 22.

Glenn Alburtus, 60, was charged today with criminal attempt to commit murder, two counts of first-degree arson, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault, third-degree assault and interfering with an emergency call.

A bond of $1 million has been set on these charges.

Police said on Feb. 22 they responded to the couple's home at 19 Beaver Dam Trail to find a woman in the house yelling for help from the second floor. Officers went inside and discovered the home was on fire. Fire and smoke forced officers out of the house, police said.

Neighbors said that the woman, later identified by police as Susan Alburtus, had to jump to safety.

Susan Alburtus remains hospitalized at Yale-New Haven Hospital, police said. Her condition was not available.

On the day of the fire, police charged Glenn Alburtus with second-degree threatening, first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree unlawful restraint and disorderly conduct.
