    Stonington names artificial turf contractor

Stonington — The new artificial turf football field at Stonington High School will be the same type of turf that the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers play on and will be installed by the company that installed the field at Gillette Stadium for the New England Patriots.

On Monday night, the Athletic Field Improvements Oversight Committee decided to have RAD Sports of Rockland, Mass., the low bidder on the project, install Shaw Legion turf, which has alternating panels of different shades of green.

“We were very impressed with the field there. It looks very distinctive,” said First Selectman Ed Haberek.

He said the Board of Selectmen is expected to formally select RAD Sports for the project next week. Work is slated to begin May 1. Plans are to have the field ready for play when students return to school in August.

Because of the work, the June 19 high school graduation will be held at the Coast Guard Academy in New London.

RAD bid $969,000 for the work at Palmer Field, which the town had estimated would cost $1.1 million. It was the lowest of the four bids the town received.

RAD has installed fields at numerous high schools and colleges across New England, including Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, University of Rhode Island and Brown University. It has also installed a field and track at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton.

Voters approved the $2.7 million project to build the artificial turf field and repair the grass fields last year. Work to rebuild the softball, boys’ soccer and field hockey fields will begin after the artificial turf field is done, Haberek said.
