Man charged in Groton with sexual assault

A 20-year-old Taftville man charged over the weekend with sexually assaulting two young girls he knew was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bond at his arraignment today in New London Superior Court.

Groton Town Police charged Shawn Anderson, of 460 Shetucket Ave., with three counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. At his arraignment, Judge Karen A. Goodrow transferred the case to the court where major crimes are heard and continued it to May 7.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, town police began investigating in February after one of the alleged victims, who is 10, admitted she had been raped when a medical professional treating her for a urinary tract infection asked if she was sexually active.

The girl told investigators that Anderson had been raping her since she was 4 years old. She said that in the most recent incident Anderson had videotaped the incident with his phone. The other victim, who is 11, disclosed that Anderson had sexually assaulted her in the summer of 2012 while everyone else in the home was sleeping.

Anderson initially denied the sexual assaults and agreed to a polygraph examination, according to the affidavit. He admitted to one incident after the polygraph results indicated he was being deceptive. Anderson told the police he has not had a phone for a few months and the one he had been using was broken during a basketball game.
